About GCC files

The .gcc file extension is primarily associated with three distinct, highly specialized formats: Gene Construction Kit plasmid maps, COSMO-SkyMed geocoded products, and Absolute Database compressed archives. In molecular biology, .gcc files store DNA sequences and plasmid maps created by the legacy Gene Construction Kit (GCK). Today, researchers typically use SnapGene to open and migrate these older genetic files. In the remote sensing industry, a .gcc file is a Geocoded Ellipsoid Corrected product captured by the Italian Space Agency (ASI) COSMO-SkyMed satellite constellation. These files contain dense Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery. Finally, a .gcc file can also function as a compressed data container for the ComponentAce Absolute Database engine.

The main disadvantage of the .gcc format is its extreme fragmentation across completely unrelated industries. Biological .gcc files are proprietary and difficult to open without a paid SnapGene license. Satellite .gcc files are massive, complex binary radar datasets that standard image viewers cannot parse, requiring heavy GIS software like ENVI or specialized plugins. Absolute Database files are proprietary Delphi database formats. Standard online converters fail to process .gcc files because they rely on generic file signatures and cannot interpret these specialized, proprietary data structures.

For biological files, the best conversion target is standard FASTA or DNA to retain base sequence data, though visual map annotations will likely be lost. Satellite data is typically exported to GeoTIFF (TIF) or HDF5 for broad GIS compatibility. Absolute Database archives are actually standard ZIP files under the hood and can be extracted to plain text or SQL dumps.

Because these are closed, proprietary formats, extracting the raw data often requires the original software. However, convert.guru serves as a realistic, pragmatic workaround for file challenges. Drag and drop your file to see what it is and convert it if supported. Even if the primary format is highly proprietary, our engine inspects the internal content. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format - such as a standard ZIP archive within an Absolute Database .gcc file - viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your GCC file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted PDF, STS, RWD, CHP and PCF files.

The GCC Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GCC converter.
