About GAT files

The .GAT file extension represents a collision of three distinct computing eras: massive multiplayer gaming, enterprise network security, and legacy advertising software. Most commonly, a .GAT file contains binary altitude and terrain data for Ragnarok Online, a classic MMORPG developed by Gravity. These files define the physical properties of a game map - specifically the height of the ground and where characters can walk. Because they are strictly proprietary binary files, you cannot open them in standard image editors like Adobe Photoshop. To view or edit this terrain data, users typically resort to niche community tools like BrowEdit or attempt to convert the geometry into standard 3D formats like OBJ.

In enterprise environments, a .GAT file often serves a completely different purpose: acting as a configuration backup for WatchGuard XTM security appliances or Check Point firewalls. For WatchGuard users, these files are frequently just renamed ZIP archives containing XML configurations and system logs. The friction here is the obscurity; a system administrator might inherit a .GAT file without the corresponding hardware to read it. By converting or simply renaming the extension to ZIP, the internal text data often becomes accessible.

Finally, you may encounter .GAT files related to the now-defunct Gator eWallet, an early 2000s software often classified as adware. These contain legacy user data or passwords and are generally obsolete. For modern workflows, the goal is usually extraction: converting game maps to 3D meshes for creative projects, or converting firewall configs to TXT or XML for auditing.

Convert.Guru analyzes your GAT file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted BN, RFS and RRF files.
