The .G3 file extension is primarily associated with CCITT Group 3 fax images, but it is also used for eye-tracking telemetry data by Pupil Labs and as proprietary game assets by PlayMechanix. As a fax image, it relies on a highly outdated 1D run-length encoding designed for analog phone lines. These files are strictly 1-bit black-and-white, offer extremely low resolution, and lack compatibility with modern web browsers or default operating system photo viewers. Software like GIMP can open them, but dealing with raw .G3 files is a frustrating experience for everyday users due to their lack of standard metadata. If your file is telemetry data from Pupil Labs or a GoPro camera, it is typically plain text structured as JSON and requires specialized analysis software like Pupil Player.
