The .FWL file is a proprietary metadata file used primarily by the popular survival game Valheim, developed by Iron Gate Studio. It acts as a companion to the main world database file, storing critical configuration data such as the world's name, seed, and generation parameters.
The main disadvantage of the .FWL format is its heavily restricted, closed-source nature. Because it relies entirely on the internal game engine to be parsed, you cannot simply double-click it to read the contents. It is strictly coupled with a DB file; if you separate them, your game map will refuse to load and you risk losing hundreds of hours of player progress. Furthermore, modifying it with a standard text editor almost guarantees file corruption due to its binary encoding.
Conversion options for .FWL files are very limited. Standard document converters fail entirely because the file does not contain printable text or standard layout data. The most practical "conversion" involves extracting the world seed or metadata into TXT, JSON, or XML formats for server administration purposes. Direct conversion to other game save formats is impossible.
