About FTB files
The .FTB file is a proprietary genealogy database created by MyHeritage Family Tree Builder to store complex family trees, including names, dates, relationship hierarchies, and media metadata. It is primarily opened and managed using the MyHeritage Family Tree Builder desktop software, though other tools like Ancestris sometimes interact with similar genealogical datasets. The main disadvantage of the .FTB format is vendor lock-in. Because it is a closed, proprietary file, you cannot easily share it with relatives who use competing platforms like Ancestry or open-source alternatives like Gramps. Furthermore, standard online converters fail to process .FTB files because the relational structure of the database is highly complex and specific to MyHeritage's internal logic. To ensure long-term preservation, genealogists must convert these files to .GED (GEDCOM), the universal standard for family tree data exchange. Exporting to .GED ensures maximum compatibility, although some software-specific formatting or custom chart settings may be lost. Because this file format is difficult to open or convert directly outside the original environment, we recommend a pragmatic workaround. Under the hood, many .FTB files are structured as SQL databases. If our analysis detects this underlying or embedded format, viewing the raw tabular data or extracting text records may still be possible without the original software.
Convert.Guru analyzes your FTB file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert FTB file to DB, SQLITE, SQLITE3, MDB, ACCDB, DBF, ODB, FDB, GDB, MYD, FRM or SQL, you can use Family Tree Builder or similar software from the "Genealogy Database Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert NDF, SQLITE3, BAK, RDB, SQL, DB4, MDF, MDB, LDF, DB, DB3 or SQLITE files to FTB, try Family Tree Builder or another comparable tool in the "Genealogy Database Storage" category.
The FTB Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our FTB converter.
