About FS2 files
The .fs2 file format stores FreeSpace 2 Mission Definitions used by the classic 1999 space combat simulation game developed by Volition. These files contain all the parameters required to execute a specific mission, including 3D ship placements, spatial waypoints, scripted events, dialogue triggers, and objective logic. The primary software used to create or edit these files is the FreeSpace Mission Editor (FRED2). There are significant disadvantages to the .fs2 format. It is a highly specialized, legacy game asset format that is entirely unsupported by standard text editors or modern database tools out of the box. Users typically need to convert or extract data from .fs2 files to modernize the mission logic, port the game to newer engines, or simply read the mission scripts without installing a 25-year-old game. When attempting conversion, the most practical target formats are plain text (TXT), JSON, or XML for human-readable script analysis. However, converting these files outside the game engine often results in the loss of executable spatial logic. Because .fs2 is a proprietary game format, standard online converters fail to process it. Usually, only the original FRED2 editor or community-built source code project tools can properly read or export the structured data. Our platform can inspect the internal content, extract embedded strings or raw text, and help you salvage mission dialogue or coordinate data even if direct conversion is impossible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your FS2 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert FS2 file to EXE, ISO, BIN, CUE, PAK, WAD, PK3, PK4, BSP, MAP, SAV or DAT, you can use FreeSpace Editor (FRED2) or similar software from the "Game Mission Data Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MOD, BIN, CFG, SCX, DAT, MPQ, LOG, CUE, INI, EXE, SCM or ISO files to FS2, try FreeSpace Editor (FRED2) or another comparable tool in the "Game Mission Data Storage" category.
The FS2 Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our FS2 converter.
