About FRK files
A .frk file is most commonly a firmware update package designed for FrSky radio control (RC) receivers and transmitters. These binary files contain the low-level operating instructions required to patch hardware bugs, improve signal stability, or add new protocols to RC equipment.
The Problem: Because .frk files are raw binary containers, they are completely unreadable to standard text editors or document viewers. Double-clicking one in Windows or macOS will simply trigger an "Unknown File Type" error. A common limitation for hobbyists is the strict file naming convention required by flashing tools; if the filename is too long (often over 32 characters), the radio hardware may fail to recognize the file entirely. Furthermore, these files are proprietary and hardware-specific - attempting to flash the wrong .frk to a device can "brick" the receiver, rendering it useless.
The Solution: For RC enthusiasts, the goal isn't usually to convert the file to a document, but to transfer it to a compatible format for flashing or archiving.
For Flashing: Use OpenTX Companion to manage firmware updates. You may need to rename the file to a shorter length (e.g., firmware.frk) before copying it to your radio's SD card.
For Analysis: Developers might convert .frk content to HEX or BIN for hex editing or reverse engineering, though this is advanced usage.
Legacy Mac Usage: In rare cases (approx. 0.9%), a .frk file represents a Macintosh Resource Fork - a hidden file generated when legacy Mac files are transferred to non-HFS file systems (like Windows NTFS). These are often junk files (e.g., ._image.jpg.frk) that can be safely deleted or converted to standard ZIP archives if they contain valuable resource data.
Convert.Guru analyzes your FRK file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert FRK file to SYS, DLL, EXE, DRV, VXD, 386, COM, BAT, CMD, SCR, PIF or LNK, you can use OpenTX Companion or similar software from the "Radio Receiver Firmware Update" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MSI, EXE, REG, MST, LNK, CAB, CAT, DRV, INF, SYS, MSU or DLL files to FRK, try OpenTX Companion or another comparable tool in the "Radio Receiver Firmware Update" category.
The FRK Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our FRK converter.
