About FRAMES files

A .frames file is typically a plain text JSON document used to define animation sequences for 2D games, most notably Starbound. Instead of containing actual pixel data, this file acts as a coordinate map. It tells the game engine how to slice a corresponding PNG sprite sheet into individual animation frames (e.g., "idle.1" is at x:0, y:0). Because it is purely metadata, you cannot "play" a .frames file in a media player like VLC or Windows Media Player.

Users often encounter this file when modding Starbound or exporting sprite data from pixel art tools like Piskel. The practical friction arises when users expect a video file but find unreadable code. To "convert" this file effectively, you usually need the associated source image. For modding, the best target format is raw JSON or Text for editing in Notepad++. For visual previewing, you must combine the .frames data with its PNG sheet to generate a GIF or WebP animation.

Convert.Guru analyzes your FRAMES file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted SCAN, FSP, MMO, VIDEO, GIF and ANIMATION files.

The FRAMES Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our FRAMES converter.
