About FRAMES files
The .frames file is primarily used by the video game Starbound to define animation frames for in-game objects, weapons, and characters. These files are structurally plain text formatted in a JSON hierarchy. Another secondary use is for animated sprite sheet framing data generated by pixel art software like Piskel or Aseprite. Less commonly, .frames files act as IntelliTrace call stack logs generated by Microsoft Visual Studio during debugging.
The main disadvantage of the .frames format is its rigid, engine-specific nature. Because it merely stores coordinates, dimensions, and names of animation frames, it lacks actual visual data. Standard image viewers or media players cannot open these files. Furthermore, for game modders, modifying these files without proper syntax tools is risky; a single missing bracket or comma in the JSON code will completely crash the game upon launch. Users typically need to convert or rename these files to standard JSON or TXT to edit them safely in advanced text editors.
Because this file acts as a proprietary data dictionary rather than a media file, standard online image or video converters fail completely when trying to process it. They expect pixel data but find text arrays. Just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible using convert.guru. Our tool will safely inspect the file, bypass file-extension restrictions, and expose the underlying text or internal content. If our analysis detects a valid JSON structure, text viewing and extraction will be seamlessly supported.
Convert.Guru analyzes your FRAMES file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert FRAMES file to VIDEO, GIF, ANIMATION, INI, CFG, CONF, CONFIG, JSON, XML, YAML, YML or TOML, you can use Starbound or similar software from the "Game Animation Frame Definitions" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert ZSHRC, CONF, RCFILE, GITCONFIG, RC, PLIST, BASHRC, CONFIG, PROFILE, INI, PREFS or CFG files to FRAMES, try Starbound or another comparable tool in the "Game Animation Frame Definitions" category.
The FRAMES Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our FRAMES converter.
