About FONIX files
A .fonix file is a document, image, or system file that has been maliciously encrypted by the Fonix ransomware (also known as FonixCrypter or Xinof). When a computer is infected, the malware targets common file types, encrypts their contents using strong cryptographic algorithms (like AES and RSA), and appends the .fonix extension to the filename.
Users need to 'convert' or restore these files because the original data is completely locked and inaccessible. The primary disadvantage of this format is that it is the result of a cyberattack. Files often exceed standard sizes due to encryption overhead, and the format exists solely to extort money from victims in exchange for a decryption key.
Standard online converters fail to process .fonix files because they are not standard media or document formats. They are encrypted data blocks. A format converter translates recognizable data structures, but it cannot bypass military-grade encryption without the private key.
Fortunately, the developers of the Fonix ransomware shut down their operations in 2021 and released the master decryption keys. You do not need to pay a ransom. You can restore your files to their target formats (like DOCX, JPG, or PDF) using a verified decryption tool from security providers like Emsisoft or the No More Ransom Project.
Because this is a closed, maliciously encrypted format, standard conversion is impossible. Our analysis can inspect the file headers to confirm the ransomware strain, even if decryption requires dedicated external software.
Convert.Guru analyzes your FONIX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The FONIX Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our FONIX converter.
