About FLIC files
.FLIC (FLIC Animation) is a legacy multimedia format created by Autodesk in the early 1990s. It was heavily used by MS-DOS programs like Autodesk Animator and Animator Pro to store 2D raster animations. The format handles frame-by-frame graphics using an early form of delta compression, meaning it only records the pixels that change from one frame to the next. You can learn more about the technical specifications of the FLIC format on Wikipedia.
Users must convert .FLIC files because the format is practically dead. Modern operating systems, smartphones, and web browsers lack the native codecs to display them. Furthermore, the format is severely limited by modern standards: it is permanently restricted to an 8-bit palette (256 colors maximum) and cannot contain any audio data. This makes it useless for contemporary multimedia projects. To view the raw content today, you are forced to rely on legacy emulators or specialized media players like VLC media player.
To make these animations accessible, the best conversion targets are MP4 for universal video playback, or GIF for looping web animations. WebM is also an excellent target for modern browser compatibility. Keep in mind that converting a .FLIC file will not magically improve its quality; the low resolution and 256-color limit are permanently baked into the source file.
This format is extremely difficult to open or convert today because the proprietary Autodesk run-length encoding (RLE) logic was abandoned decades ago. Standard online converters fail to process it because they lack support for MS-DOS era codecs. Just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible. convert.guru inspects the file's internal content to bypass these legacy hurdles. If our analysis detects the supported underlying frame structure, viewing or conversion to modern formats may still be possible.

The FLIC Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our FLIC converter.
