About FLAG files
The .flag file extension represents multiple distinct formats. Primarily, it is a design data file created by FlagMaker (stored in UTF-16 LE text format) or a flag definition file used in Paradox Interactive games. It is also frequently encountered in Capture The Flag (CTF) cybersecurity competitions (like PicoCTF) as either an Executable and Linkable Format (ELF) binary or a disguised Portable Network Graphics image. These files are highly context-dependent. A .flag file from FlagMaker is essentially a proprietary text document detailing layer coordinates, colors, and overlays, meaning it cannot be natively viewed as an image without rendering it in the original software. Game flag files dictate in-game textures and are useless outside the game engine. CTF files are purposely obfuscated, lacking native file associations in standard operating systems. For FlagMaker files, you typically want to convert the design to PNG or SVG for web compatibility. CTF files usually require renaming or binary extraction rather than standard conversion. Because .flag is an arbitrary extension used by niche tools and hacking competitions, standard online converters fail to process it. Only the original software can properly render the vector flag designs or execute the binaries. Our analysis engine can inspect the file, identify whether it is a disguised PNG, an ELF executable, or plain text, and extract the underlying data or show the text.
Convert.Guru analyzes your FLAG file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert FLAG file to MP3, WAV, AAC, FLAC, OGG, WMA, M4A, AIFF, OPUS, ALAC, APE or WV, you can use FlagMaker or similar software from the "Flag Design & Game Data" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

The FLAG Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our FLAG converter.
