About FLAG files
The .FLAG extension is most commonly associated with FlagMaker, a popular open-source tool used by world-builders and vexillology enthusiasts to design custom flags. These files act as a recipe rather than a standard image; they contain the coordinate data, overlay shapes, and color codes required to reconstruct the flag, rather than pixel data.
Because .FLAG files are essentially text-based save states (often encoded in UTF-16 or XML), they cannot be opened by standard image viewers like Microsoft Photos or edited in raster software like Adobe Photoshop. This proprietary lock-in means you must have the specific version of FlagMaker installed just to view your design. For universal sharing, web publishing, or printing, users should convert .FLAG files to standard raster formats like PNG or JPG. If you need to preserve the scalability of the geometric shapes for high-quality printing, converting to SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) is the ideal solution.
Alternatively, in the context of Paradox Interactive grand strategy games (like Hearts of Iron IV or Europa Universalis IV), a .FLAG file may be a script definition used to assign flags to specific countries within the game's code. These are plain text files that often need to be converted to TXT to be readable by human editors. Lastly, in the cybersecurity domain (CTF competitions), a .FLAG file might be a misnamed ELF executable or a hidden text string required to solve a challenge.
Convert.Guru analyzes your FLAG file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The FLAG Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our FLAG converter.
