About FIRM files
The .FIRM file format is predominantly a proprietary, compiled binary package used as a hardware payload. Its primary use case is within the Nintendo 3DS homebrew ecosystem, acting as boot firmware (such as Boot9Strap or Luma3DS). A secondary use case is for distributing firmware updates to Evolis card printers. These files are highly specific to the hardware architecture they target. Because .FIRM is a closed, proprietary binary, standard online converters fail completely - they are designed for documents, not raw device payloads. Trying to edit these files directly in a text editor will yield gibberish, and modifying the binary data without proper cryptographic keys will corrupt the payload, potentially bricking the target device. Users typically look to convert or open these files to extract the underlying ARM9 payloads, decrypt the firmware, or inspect version headers. Because this file format is difficult to open or convert, standard tools fall short. However, convert.guru provides a pragmatic solution. Just drag and drop your .FIRM file to identify the format, inspect the raw binary, and view its internal content. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or extraction of the raw components may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your FIRM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert FIRM file to SYS, DLL, EXE, DRV, VXD, 386, COM, BAT, CMD, SCR, PIF or LNK, you can use Luma3DS or similar software from the "Hardware Firmware Update Payload" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MSI, EXE, REG, MST, LNK, CAB, CAT, DRV, INF, SYS, MSU or DLL files to FIRM, try Luma3DS or another comparable tool in the "Hardware Firmware Update Payload" category.
The FIRM Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our FIRM converter.
