About FIM files

A .FIM file typically belongs to one of several niche software ecosystems. The most common uses are an Agent filter data archive used by the Forte Agent newsreader to manage filtered internet mail, and a CAD steel framing file created by FrameCAD software for manufacturing steel structures. It can also act as a renamed TIFF or FITS image file, an IBM FileNet Form Image, or a Forensic Image Match file. The main disadvantage of .FIM files is their severe fragmentation. Because multiple programs use the exact same extension for completely different data types, standard operating systems fail to route them to the correct application. FrameCAD models are closed-source and require expensive proprietary CAD software to view. Forte Agent is a legacy Usenet client. Attempting to open these files in a standard text editor usually yields unreadable binary data.
