About FIM files
The .fim file extension represents a collision of several distinct formats, creating significant confusion for users. Most commonly, it acts as a filter data archive for Forte Agent, a veteran Usenet newsreader. These files store your sorting rules and email filters in a proprietary structure that text editors cannot meaningfully interpret.
However, in industrial contexts, a .fim file is often a FrameCAD structure file used in cold-formed steel engineering. These CAD files are strictly locked to the FrameCAD ecosystem, making them impossible to view without an expensive software license.
Less frequently, .fim may be a legacy IBM FileNet image or a FITS (Flexible Image Transport System) file used in astronomy.
The key problem is this ambiguity: you cannot know if you have a text archive, a 3D model, or a raster image without specialized tools. Proprietary lock-in prevents standard viewers like Windows Photos or Notepad from opening them.
Conversion Recommendations:
For FrameCAD/CAD: Convert to PDF for easy sharing with clients or DXF for interoperability with other CAD tools.
For Images (FileNet/FITS): Convert to JPG or PNG to make the visual data accessible on web and mobile devices.
For Forte Agent: While generally strictly internal, converting to TXT may allow you to recover configuration strings.

The FIM Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our FIM converter.
