About FDE files

The .FDE file extension is highly fragmented and used by entirely unrelated, specialized enterprise systems. Most commonly, it acts as a Medical Form Definition file for FormFast (now Interlace Health) or SoftWriters FrameworkLTC. In healthcare, these files store templates for patient wristbands, labels, and administrative documents.

Another major variant is the Visual FoxPro XML Dataset. Microsoft Visual FoxPro generates these files to export relational database records. Additionally, .FDE files serve as CAD Drawings in Fujitsu ICAD/SX, a niche engineering suite.

Users frequently need to convert .FDE files because the native software is either discontinued (FoxPro), locked behind massive enterprise healthcare contracts (FormFast), or region-locked to specific manufacturing sectors (Fujitsu). You cannot open these files in standard office suites, and attempting to view them without the parent software usually results in an error.

The massive disadvantage of the .FDE format is its proprietary nature. Standard online converters fail completely because the FormFast and Fujitsu variants are closed, binary formats. Without the original layout engine, rebuilding the exact visual representation is practically impossible. However, the FoxPro variant is actually just structured XML text.

For FoxPro data, your best target formats are CSV, JSON, or standard XML to rescue the data from a dead database ecosystem. For medical forms, converting to PDF is the ultimate goal. We can identify the file format, inspect the raw data, and extract text or embedded XML schemas even if a direct visual conversion is blocked by proprietary locks.

Convert.Guru analyzes your FDE file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted FDM, EDA and XLE files.

The FDE Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database.
