About FDAT files
If you are dealing with an .FDAT file, you are likely handling one of two incompatible binary formats that cannot be opened with standard text editors. The first and most user-centric variety is a data file associated with Minecraft. While standard Minecraft player data typically uses DAT, the .FDAT extension often appears in specific modding environments (like FastCraft) or server backup routines to store player inventory, location coordinates, and world states. The friction here is that the file is a compressed binary blob (often NBT-formatted); trying to edit it in Notepad++ yields useless garbled characters. To modify player stats or recover a corrupted save, you must convert this binary data into a readable format like JSON or parse it with a dedicated viewer like NBTExplorer.
The second common variant functions as a system index for digital set-top boxes powered by ALI Corp chipsets (commonly found in brands like Openbox, Skybox, or generic satellite receivers). In this context, the .FDAT file is automatically generated by the receiver on a USB drive to index firmware updates (ABS files) or recorded streams. Users often find these files and attempt to play them as video, which fails because the .FDAT contains only metadata pointers, not audio or video streams. For archiving or editing game data, converting to JSON or XML is ideal. For firmware files, conversion is rarely possible or useful; these files function best when left in their native environment alongside their parent ABS or BIN files.
Convert.Guru analyzes your FDAT file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The FDAT Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our FDAT converter.
