About FAV files

The .FAV file extension is primarily used as a screen recording video file by Mirillis Action!. However, because the extension simply stands for "favorites," it is also widely used by AOL Desktop, Microsoft Outlook, and legacy media players like Winamp to store user bookmark lists and cache data.

The main disadvantage of .FAV files is their extreme fragmentation and proprietary nature. A .FAV video file uses a closed codec that standard media players and web browsers cannot read. It strictly requires the original Mirillis software to open. Similarly, favorites cache files are serialized databases locked to a specific ecosystem. You cannot easily transfer an AOL Desktop .FAV file to a modern web browser.

To make these files usable, you must convert them. Video .FAV files should be exported to MP4 or AVI for universal playback, though this process may apply compression to the raw recording. Favorites lists are best exported to CSV or HTML bookmark files to ensure portability, but you almost always need the parent application to execute this export.

Because this file format is heavily fragmented and closed, standard online converters fail to process it. They cannot decode the proprietary video streams or parse the undocumented database structures. Just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible on convert.guru. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible, allowing you to extract raw text or URLs from a locked favorites cache.

Convert.Guru analyzes your FAV file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted CEF, DUC and SRH files.
