About FAV files
The .FAV extension is a "chameleon" format used by various distinct applications, creating confusion because the solution depends entirely on which software created it.
1. Mirillis Action! Screen Recordings: If your file is large (several MB or GB), it is likely a proprietary screen recording created by Mirillis Action!. These files are often raw containers designed for high-performance capture. The main disadvantage is that standard media players like VLC cannot play them directly, and they cannot be uploaded to YouTube without conversion. To make them usable, you must typically use the Action! interface to export the recording to a standard MP4 or AVI format.
2. AOL & Outlook Favorites: If the file is small (KB size), it is likely a "Favorites" cache or configuration file from older software like AOL Desktop or a settings file for Microsoft Outlook. These files store shortcuts, bookmarks, or folder organization hierarchies in a format specific to that program. Users frequently face difficulties here because modern browsers (Chrome, Edge) do not support importing these legacy .FAV files directly. For archiving or migration, the best approach is often to open the file in a text editor like Notepad++ to attempt to scrape URLs, or convert them to a standard HTML bookmark file if a specific utility exists.
Convert.Guru analyzes your FAV file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert FAV file to MP3, WAV, AAC, FLAC, OGG, WMA, M4A, AIFF, OPUS, ALAC, APE or WV, you can use Mirillis Action! or similar software from the "Application Favorites or Recording" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

The FAV Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our FAV converter.
