About EXL files

The .EXL file is primarily an XML-formatted nutrition analysis recipe data file created by ESHA Research software, specifically Genesis R&D or FoodPro. These files store highly detailed recipe data, ingredient breakdowns, FoodProSQL database links, and dietary compliance information used heavily in the food and beverage manufacturing industry for FDA labeling.

The main disadvantage of the .EXL format is that it is a highly specialized, proprietary container. Without an expensive, active license for ESHA software, these files are virtually useless to the average user. Standard database or spreadsheet tools cannot natively interpret the complex relational data schema within the file.

Since the underlying structure of a standard .EXL file is often XML, the best conversion targets are XML, CSV, or TXT. Extracting the file to these standard text formats allows you to recover raw ingredient text and numerical dietary data, even if the strict visual formatting is lost.

Because this file relies on a proprietary schema, standard online converters usually fail to process it. Often, only the original ESHA software can accurately export the full nutritional report to an Excel or PDF format. However, you can drag and drop your .EXL file into convert.guru to instantly identify its internal structure. If our analysis detects the underlying XML text, viewing the raw data or extracting the text content is still possible.

Note: In rare cases, an .EXL file may actually be an encrypted ZIP container created by the Everbe 2.0 Ransomware. If your text editor shows scrambled binary data instead of structured XML, the file is encrypted.

Convert.Guru analyzes your EXL file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The EXL Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our EXL converter.
