Convert a file to EXL
To convert other file formats to the "Nutrition Analysis Data" file type, you need software like Genesis R&D or a similar tool.
About EXL files
The .EXL file extension is primarily associated with nutrition analysis and recipe management, specifically as an export format from Genesis R&D and The Food Processor by Trustwell (formerly ESHA Research). These files contain structured data regarding ingredients, allergens, and nutritional values used to generate FDA-compliant labels.
For users without access to the expensive, enterprise-grade Genesis software, opening these files is a major friction point. However, because the underlying format is often standard XML (Extensible Markup Language), a pragmatic workaround exists: you can often simply rename the extension from .exl to XML and open it in a web browser or text editor like Notepad++. For data manipulation, you can import the renamed XML file directly into Microsoft Excel to convert the nutrition tables into a CSV or XLSX spreadsheet.
Critical Security Warning: A small percentage of .exl files are not recipe data but documents encrypted by the Everbe 2.0 ransomware. If your file contains gibberish, cannot be viewed as text, and is accompanied by a ransom note, do not attempt to rename or edit it.
Convert.Guru analyzes your EXL file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert EXL file to XLS, XLSX, XLSM, XLSB, ODS, CSV, TSV, TAB, DIF, SLK, WK1 or WK3, you can use Genesis R&D or similar software from the "Nutrition Recipe Data Export" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert WQ1, XLSM, NOTES, QPW, WK3, WB2, WKS, XLSB, 123, XLS, WB1 or XLSX files to EXL, try Genesis R&D or another comparable tool in the "Nutrition Recipe Data Export" category.
The EXL Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our EXL converter.
