About EX1 files

A .EX1 file is almost always a renamed EXE (Microsoft Windows Executable) file. Users and system administrators typically rename executables to .EX1 to bypass security filters, email attachment limits, or antivirus software that automatically block standard executable files. The primary disadvantage of this format is that it cannot run natively; the operating system does not recognize the .EX1 extension as an application. Furthermore, receiving an unexpected .EX1 file is a massive security risk, as it is a common tactic used to distribute malware.

You do not traditionally "convert" an .EX1 file. Instead, the solution is to simply rename the file extension back to EXE. Since this is a compiled executable, standard online converters fail to process it. It contains machine code, not document data. However, you can drag and drop your file to see what it is and convert it if supported. convert.guru can inspect the internal file headers (like the MZ signature) to verify if it is genuinely a Windows executable or something else entirely.

Convert.Guru analyzes your EX1 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted CAR, TMP and HTA files.

The EX1 Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our EX1 converter.
