About EX1 files
A .EX1 file is technically a standard Windows Executable (EXE) that has been renamed to bypass security filters or prevent accidental execution. Email providers and antivirus software often modify the extension of executable attachments to neutralize potential malware threats, rendering the file inert.
The immediate friction for users is that the operating system no longer recognizes the file header; double-clicking a .EX1 file triggers an "Open With" dialog rather than launching the program. This lock-out is intentional. While the file contents are usually identical to the original executable, the modified extension prevents Windows from running code that might be malicious.
For functional use, the file typically needs to be renamed back to EXE. However, this carries significant security risks if the source is untrusted. A safer alternative for analysis is to "convert" or treat the file as a container. Tools like 7-Zip can often open executables as archives, allowing you to extract internal resources (icons, bitmaps, version info) without executing the binary.
Convert.Guru analyzes your EX1 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert EX1 file to TMP, TEMP, CACHE, LOG, BAK, OLD, NEW, PART, DOWNLOAD, CRDOWNLOAD, LOCK or PID, you can use Microsoft Windows or similar software from the "Renamed Executable File" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DEVICE, CACHE, SOCK, SYMLINK, PID, MOUNT, FIFO, LOG, PIPE, TMP, JUNCTION or TEMP files to EX1, try Microsoft Windows or another comparable tool in the "Renamed Executable File" category.
The EX1 Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our EX1 converter.
