About EWL files

The .ewl extension is shared between two completely different formats, causing frequent confusion.

1. EclipseCrossword Word List (Convertible)

This is a plain text file used by EclipseCrossword to store word-clue pairs for generating puzzles. Users often need to convert these files to standard TXT, CSV, or XLSX formats to edit their word banks in Microsoft Excel or use them in other educational tools. The file structure is simple: each line contains a word and a clue separated by a colon (e.g., CAT: feline). However, creating these manually is error-prone due to strict formatting rules like avoiding extra spaces or incompatible encodings.

Best Conversion Targets:

To Text (.TXT): Strips proprietary headers, leaving just the raw word list.
To Spreadsheet (.CSV): ideal for importing large word banks into databases or flashcard apps.

2. EasyWorship License File (Non-Convertible)

The most common use (approx. 62%) is a system license file for EasyWorship, a church presentation software. These files (often named EasyWorshipLicense.ewl) function as digital keys to unlock the software offline.

Critical Distinction: Users often mistake this for a presentation file (POwerPoint or .EWSX). You cannot "open" or "convert" this file to view slides. It contains encrypted registration data that is only readable by the EasyWorship registration wizard. Attempting to convert this to PDF or DOCX will result in a file full of gibberish code.
