A .EWL file generally serves one of two completely different purposes. Primarily, it is a proprietary software license file used to authenticate EasyWorship, a popular church presentation application. Alternatively, it functions as a crossword puzzle word list created by EclipseCrossword, a puzzle generation tool developed by Green Eclipse.
The main disadvantage of the .EWL format is its strict vendor lock-in. EasyWorship license files are locked and encrypted to prevent piracy, meaning you cannot open, edit, or modify them without instantly invalidating the software registration. EclipseCrossword word lists are simpler, but they use a proprietary plain-text structure that mainstream dictionary apps, web browsers, and spreadsheet tools do not recognize natively.
Users frequently need to convert EclipseCrossword .EWL files to standard TXT or CSV formats to share puzzle vocabulary, especially since EclipseCrossword does not have a native macOS version. Converting an EasyWorship license, however, is completely impossible and serves no practical purpose. Because .EWL is a closed, proprietary format, standard online converters fail to process it. Usually, only the original software can properly read or export the data.
