The .EWD file extension is predominantly used as an official electronic receipt document by the Polish e-government platform ePUAP and the Polish Social Insurance Institution (ZUS) via the Płatnik software. These files function as secure digital proofs of submission. Additionally, the .EWD extension acts as an embedded debugger project file in IAR Embedded Workbench and as a woodworking CAD/CAM project in DDX EasyWOOD. The main disadvantage of an .EWD file is its highly proprietary and fractured nature. Polish government .EWD files are essentially ZIP archives containing XML data and cryptographic signatures, making them unreadable to standard users without specialized viewers like eWD Viewer. Similarly, DDX EasyWOOD files use GZ compression, and IAR files are strictly bound to specific IDE environments.
Users typically want to convert the internal data of an .EWD receipt into a standard PDF for easier sharing, or extract the underlying XML for record-keeping. However, because .EWD acts as a specialized container, standard document converters fail to process them directly without breaking the cryptographic seal or corrupting the CAD geometry. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data.
