About EWD files
The .ewd file extension is a source of confusion because it serves two very different, high-friction sectors: government administration and embedded software development.
Most commonly, an .ewd file is an Electronic Document Exchange file used by the Polish Social Insurance Institution (ZUS). These files are generated by payroll systems or the Płatnik software to report social security contributions. The major friction here is that .ewd files are strict data containers (often XML or text-based formats wrapped in ZIP) designed for machine parsing, not human reading. You cannot simply double-click them to read the contents in Word or Acrobat. Users often encounter these files when archiving business records or migrating accounting data and find themselves locked out of the information without a running instance of the specific (and often clunky) Płatnik software.
For engineers, an .ewd file might be a debugger project file created by IAR Embedded Workbench. These XML-based files store session settings, window layouts, and breakpoint configurations. While they are text-readable, they are useless outside the IDE environment. Occasionally, .ewd files appear as DDX EasyWOOD CAD designs or legacy Easy Word documents.
Best Conversion Targets:
For ZUS/Business Archives: Convert to PDF to create a legally readable, printable version of the insurance report. This "freezes" the data in a human-friendly format.
For Data Migration: Convert to standard XML or CSV to inspect the raw payroll data without importing it into the government system.
For Technical Use: Open IAR files in a text editor or convert to TXT to view configuration parameters.
Convert.Guru analyzes your EWD file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The EWD Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our EWD converter.
