About EUC files
The .EUC file extension represents an Extended Unix Code file. It is a legacy multibyte character encoding system defined by ISO/IEC to store Asian text, including Japanese (EUC-JP), Korean (EUC-KR), and Simplified Chinese (EUC-CN). Developers and system administrators originally used these files on Unix and Linux systems to manage non-ASCII characters without breaking operating system commands.
You can open these files using advanced text editors like Notepad++, Vim, or Visual Studio Code by manually selecting the correct encoding. You can read more about the encoding standard on Wikipedia.
The biggest problem with .EUC files is that modern operating systems and web browsers default to UTF-8. When you open a .EUC file without specifying the correct legacy encoding, you will see garbled text (a phenomenon known as Mojibake). This makes the file completely unusable for modern web applications, databases, or sharing with non-technical users.
The best solution is to convert the file to a standard TXT file encoded in UTF-8. This preserves the original Asian characters and makes the file universally readable across all devices. Other common targets include CSV for tabular data or XML. When converting, no visual data is lost, but the internal byte structure changes permanently to a modern standard.
Identifying the exact regional variant of an EUC file is notoriously difficult, and standard converters often ruin the text by guessing incorrectly. Our platform can inspect the file, decode the internal text, and help you save it in a universally supported format.
Convert.Guru analyzes your EUC file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert EUC file to TXT, RTF, DOC, DOCX, ODT, PAGES, TEX, LATEX, MD, MARKDOWN, LOG or NFO, you can use Notepad++ or similar software from the "Text Encoding Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert PDF, DOC, ASC, TODO, NFO, MEMO, README, DOCX, JPG, TXT, NOTE or RTF files to EUC, try Notepad++ or another comparable tool in the "Text Encoding Storage" category.
The EUC Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our EUC converter.
