About ETC files
A .etc file is a highly fragmented, multi-purpose extension whose contents depend entirely on the software that created it. Most commonly, it represents an Ericsson Texture Compression (ETC) graphic used for hardware-accelerated 3D graphics in mobile gaming and Microsoft Flight Simulator X. Alternatively, the extension is widely used to store electrical test protocols generated by Gossen Metrawatt testing devices, dimmer rack configurations for Electronic Theatre Controls, or spectroscopy data from PicoQuant EasyTau.
Because .etc acts as a catch-all extension, it presents massive usability challenges. Operating systems cannot automatically associate it with the correct software. If the file is an ETC texture, it is encoded for direct GPU consumption (OpenGL ES) and is fundamentally incompatible with standard image viewers, web browsers, or graphic editors. Furthermore, file-sharing services like SFILE.MOBI intentionally disguise standard MP4 videos by renaming them to .etc, preventing your media players from recognizing the file. Evernote also caches images using the .etc extension, leaving standard JPG data unreadable without manual intervention.
To make these files usable, you must convert them. For web deployment or editing of ETC textures, convert to PNG or WEBP. If you are dealing with a disguised SFILE.MOBI download, converting it to standard MP4 will restore playback compatibility. For Gossen Metrawatt electrical test data, convert to PDF for archiving or CSV for spreadsheet analysis.
Convert.Guru analyzes your ETC file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert ETC file to UTC, you can use Ericsson Texture Tools or similar software from the "Texture Compression / Test Protocol" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert files to ETC, try Ericsson Texture Tools or another comparable tool in the "Texture Compression / Test Protocol" category.
The ETC Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ETC converter.
