About ETA files
The .eta filename extension is shared by two distinct formats, often causing confusion for users attempting to open them.
The most modern and common use (approx. 13% of identifiable files) is as a Source Code Template for the Eta embedded JavaScript templating engine. These are plain text files containing HTML mixed with JavaScript logic (similar to EJS or HBS). Developers use them to dynamically generate web pages. Because they are raw source code, they cannot be opened as a finished webpage in a browser like Chrome or Edge; they must be "rendered" or converted into standard HTML using a runtime environment like Node.js or a compatible editor like Visual Studio Code.
A secondary, older definition (approx. 0.9%) is the Google Earth Placemark file. Historically associated with Google Earth, these files store geospatial coordinates and map markers. Practical constraints here are significant: modern versions of Google Earth (Web and Pro) primarily use KML and KMZ files. Users often find that legacy .eta map files fail to load directly. A common workaround involves renaming the extension to KMZ or ZIP, as the file is often just a compressed package of map data.
Best Conversion Targets:
For Web Development: Convert .eta templates to HTML (rendered output) for browser viewing, or TXT for code inspection.
For GIS/Maps: Convert legacy .eta placemarks to standard KML or GPX for broad compatibility with modern GPS software.
Convert.Guru analyzes your ETA file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted ETE, JPG, KMZ, KHTMP and KVW files.

The ETA Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ETA converter.
