To convert other file formats to the "Decoder Configuration File" file type, you need software like LokProgrammer or a similar tool.
An .ESU file is a specialized project container created by the LokProgrammer software, developed by ESU (Electronic Solutions Ulm). These files are the lifeblood of digital model railroading, storing comprehensive configuration data for LokSound decoders, including motor control algorithms, light mapping, and complex sound schedules.
The primary frustration with .ESU files is their proprietary nature; they are not standard audio files. You cannot simply double-click them to hear a locomotive whistle in a media player, nor can you view the Configuration Variable (CV) list in a text editor. They are strictly designed for upload to specific hardware decoders via a Windows-only interface. This creates a significant barrier for users who want to share sound snippets, archive settings in a human-readable format, or audit decoder logic without the proprietary hardware connected.
For practical use outside the model train environment, the best conversion targets are WAV (to extract and listen to the raw sound samples) or PDF and CSV (to document the CV settings and function mappings for printing or spreadsheet analysis).
