About ESPS files

The .ESPS file format stores Entropic Signal Processing System Audio. Developed by Entropic Research Laboratories in the 1980s and 1990s, these files were heavily used in academic and corporate research for speech synthesis and recognition. They contain acoustic data coupled with highly specific headers that track sampling rates, pitch, and phonetic boundaries. Because Entropic was acquired by Microsoft in 1999, the format has been largely abandoned. The primary disadvantage of an .ESPS file today is its extreme incompatibility. Modern operating systems, web browsers, and standard media players like VLC cannot read the proprietary header data natively. The files are obsolete and essentially locked out of modern digital audio workflows. Users must convert these files to modern, uncompressed formats like .WAV or .FLAC for archival purposes, or to .MP3 for easy sharing. Converting ensures the historical speech data remains accessible. This format is notoriously difficult to process because the acoustic data is wrapped in a complex, proprietary header that standard online converters fail to parse. Often only the original legacy software can properly read or export the data. Even with unsupported proprietary headers, our platform can often inspect the file, reveal the raw text or internal hex structure, and help you determine the exact sampling rate needed to rescue the audio.

Convert.Guru analyzes your ESPS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The ESPS Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ESPS converter.
