About EPT files

A .EPT file typically serves as a hardware programming template used by the FTDI MProg utility to configure EEPROM chips. However, the .EPT extension is notoriously fragmented across entirely different industries. It is also actively used as an EPLAN project template (which is structurally an XML file), a Nokia or Ciena optical network design project (packaged as a ZIP archive), Anton Paar particle analysis measurement data, or a specialized Adobe Illustrator Encapsulated PostScript file. The main disadvantage of .EPT files is this severe format collision. Because completely unrelated software programs claim the exact same extension, double-clicking a .EPT file usually causes your operating system to launch the wrong application or throw an error. Furthermore, proprietary formats like EPLAN templates require an expensive, specialized license to view properly, while encrypted patient data .EPT files from GE Healthcare are completely locked out without proprietary keys. To solve these problems, you must identify the true underlying format before converting. If your .EPT is an EPLAN template, convert it to standard XML for text parsing and backup. If it is an optical network project, extract it as a standard ZIP archive. If it contains Adobe vector data, convert it to SVG for the web or PDF for sharing and printing.
