About EOT files
The .EOT file format primarily functions as an Embedded OpenType font. Developed by Microsoft, it was designed as a compact, proprietary font format used exclusively by Internet Explorer to display custom typography on websites. A smaller percentage of .EOT files operate as ExamView Online Test files, generated by ExamView Pro software to store educational assessments and quizzes.
The main disadvantage of the .EOT font format is its complete obsolescence. Because it is a proprietary format, it lacks support in modern web browsers like Chrome, Firefox, and Safari. Web developers must convert legacy .EOT assets into universal standards like WOFF, WOFF2, or TTF to ensure cross-browser compatibility. Similarly, ExamView .EOT files restrict access to test content, requiring specific educational software to open, print, or export.
This file format is inherently difficult to open or convert because its internal structure is highly restrictive. Fonts often use Digital Rights Management (DRM) to prevent copying, while test files use closed, proprietary data structures to prevent cheating. Because of these locked architectures, standard online converters often fail to process them. Even if direct conversion is blocked by DRM, our analysis tool can inspect the file, identify its true underlying structure, and help you view extracted text or embedded assets.
Convert.Guru analyzes your EOT file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert EOT file to TTF, OTF, WOFF, WOFF2, SVG, BDF, PCF, FNT, FON, PFM, AFM or PFB, you can use FontForge or similar software from the "Web Font Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert UFO, WOFF, PFB, GXF, AFM, F3F, SFD, WOFF2, PSF, TTF, TXF or OTF files to EOT, try FontForge or another comparable tool in the "Web Font Storage" category.
The EOT Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our EOT converter.
