About EOT files
The .EOT (Embedded OpenType) format is a legacy font container developed by Microsoft to enable custom typography on early versions of Internet Explorer. While revolutionary at its launch, .EOT files now present significant compatibility challenges for modern workflows. They are strictly proprietary and generally unsupported by current browsers like Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, or Safari, meaning your web typography may fail to load for the majority of users. Furthermore, these files often incorporate Digital Rights Management (DRM) that binds the font to a specific domain URL, preventing them from being previewed or installed on a desktop operating system easily.
To resolve these compatibility issues, the standard practice is to convert .EOT files into universally supported formats. For modern web development, converting to WOFF or WOFF2 (Web Open Font Format) is essential, as these offer superior compression and broader browser support. If you need to install the font on your local machine for design work in software like Adobe Photoshop or Microsoft Word, you must convert the file to a standard desktop format like TTF or OTF.
Note: In rare educational contexts, an .EOT file might be an ExamView Online Test file created by Echo360. These are not fonts but data files for administering quizzes.
Convert.Guru analyzes your EOT file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert EOT file to TTF, OTF, WOFF, WOFF2, SVG, BDF, PCF, FNT, FON, PFM, AFM or PFB, you can use FontForge or similar software from the "Legacy Web Font Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert UFO, WOFF, PFB, GXF, AFM, F3F, SFD, WOFF2, PSF, TTF, TXF or OTF files to EOT, try FontForge or another comparable tool in the "Legacy Web Font Storage" category.
The EOT Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our EOT converter.
