About ENML files

.ENML (Evernote Markup Language) is an XML-based file format used by Evernote to structure, format, and store digital notes. It is primarily utilized by the Evernote Android application and desktop clients for local data caching and cloud synchronization. You can learn more about the platform's history on Wikipedia.

The main disadvantage of the .ENML format is its strictly proprietary and vendor-locked design. Although it is built on standard XHTML, it relies heavily on custom tags such as <en-note>, <en-media>, and <en-todo>. Standard web browsers and word processors cannot interpret these custom tags correctly. Consequently, opening these files natively requires users to install the Evernote software and often forces them to maintain an active, paid account. Standalone .ENML files extracted from Android system backups or SD cards are essentially useless to average users because they appear broken or cluttered with raw code outside of the official ecosystem.

To regain access to your data, you must convert the file to open standards. The best target formats are HTML to retain basic web-safe formatting, MD (Markdown) for seamless migration to alternative note-taking apps like Obsidian or Notion, and TXT for plain text extraction. Be aware that converting away from this format will likely strip out Evernote-specific interactive checklists and embedded binary attachments.

Because .ENML is a closed format, generic online converters frequently fail to parse its custom XML schema. Even if full visual rendering is restricted by Evernote's proprietary limits, our analysis can usually extract the embedded readable text.

Convert.Guru analyzes your ENML file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
