About EMDL files

A .emdl file is a proprietary 3D character model format used by the EMotion FX real-time animation system. Originally developed by Mystic Game Development and later acquired by Amazon for the Lumberyard engine (now Open 3D Engine), this file stores complex 3D data including skeletal hierarchies, vertex weights, and mesh geometry inside a Microsoft Compound (OLE) document container. Because .emdl files are compiled, binary assets optimized for game runtime rather than editing, they are practically impossible to open without the specific EMotion FX SDK or legacy plugins for Autodesk Maya and 3ds Max. They are not natively supported by Blender or standard image viewers. Users typically need to convert these files to recover lost 3D assets or migrate legacy game projects to modern engines like Unity or Unreal Engine. For editing, the best target format is FBX, which preserves the skeletal structure and skinning data. For static archiving or 3D printing, converting to OBJ or STL is recommended. For web viewing, GLTF is the modern standard.

Convert.Guru analyzes your EMDL file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted 123DX, MAX and DWF files.

The EMDL Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our EMDL converter.
