To convert other file formats to the "3D Model & Animation" file type, you need software like Open 3D Engine (O3DE) or a similar tool.
About EMDL files
The .EMDL file is a proprietary 3D model and character animation format created for the EMotion FX animation system. Originally developed by MysticGD and later integrated into Amazon Lumberyard and the Open 3D Engine (O3DE), this file stores 3D meshes, skeleton hierarchies, and complex character rigging data. You will usually encounter .EMDL files when developing 3D games or exporting character models using specialized plugins in Autodesk Maya or Autodesk 3ds Max.
The main disadvantage of the .EMDL format is its heavily closed ecosystem. It relies on a proprietary Microsoft Compound file structure, making it incredibly difficult for standard 3D viewers, operating systems, or web browsers to open. You cannot simply view an .EMDL file without installing a heavy game engine environment. It locks your 3D assets into the O3DE or Lumberyard pipeline, and standard online converters routinely fail to process it because the animation graphs and mesh data are uniquely encoded.
To use this 3D asset in other software, you must convert it to an industry-standard format like FBX, OBJ, or GLTF. Converting to OBJ will permanently strip away all skeletal and animation data, leaving only a static mesh. Converting to FBX or GLTF is preferred to preserve the rigging, but this almost always requires exporting directly from the original authoring software.
Because this is a difficult, proprietary format, standard conversion tools often fail. Just drag and drop your file onto convert.guru to identify the format, view its internal structure, and convert it when possible. Our analyzer can inspect the internal streams within the file to reveal embedded metadata. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your EMDL file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The EMDL Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our EMDL converter.
