About EMBED files
An .EMBED file is a text-based document typically created by the Embed Notes web application. It stores a note's unique ID, title, body paragraphs, and typography settings. A secondary technical use for .EMBED files exists in the bioinformatics tool sPYce, which uses them for tab-indented configuration data.
To natively open or edit this file, users must rely on the Embed Notes platform. However, because it is structured under the hood as raw JSON data, you can also inspect the contents using standard text editors like Microsoft Notepad or Apple TextEdit.
The primary disadvantage of the .EMBED format is its exclusivity to a single web application. It is a proprietary format disguised as a basic text file. If a user loses access to their account or the service goes offline, the note's formatting remains locked within raw JSON syntax. Opening it in standard word processors results in a cluttered display of code brackets mixed with your actual writing. Users typically need to convert these files to migrate their data to modern workspace tools like Notion or Obsidian.
The best conversion targets for an .EMBED file are TXT (Plain Text), MD (Markdown), or PDF. Converting to TXT or MD will strip the proprietary font styling but safely preserve your written content. Exporting to PDF will capture a static snapshot of the text, removing your ability to easily edit it later.
Because .EMBED is an obscure, proprietary extension, standard online converters fail to process it. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the structured visual data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying JSON or plain text format, viewing or conversion to universal document types may still be possible.

The EMBED Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our EMBED converter.
