About EGD files

The .egd file extension is most frequently associated with Psychology Software Tools E-Prime, serving as an encrypted data container for psychology experiments (often specifically for gaze or eye-tracking data). These files are designed to be secure and tamper-proof, meaning they are binary and cannot be opened in standard text editors like Notepad or Microsoft Word. Researchers typically encounter friction when trying to analyze this raw data directly in statistical software like SPSS or R without first exporting it.

A secondary but significant use of the .egd format is in industrial automation by GE Fanuc (now part of Emerson/NiDec). In this context, the file is often a renamed ZIP archive containing compressed XML configuration data for Ethernet Global Data (EGD) protocols. Users often struggle to open these because they don't realize the file is simply a compressed archive in disguise.

For E-Prime files, the only reliable conversion workflow is using the official E-DataAid utility to export to TXT or XLSX. For GE Fanuc files, a simple workaround is renaming the extension to ZIP to extract the internal XML.

Convert.Guru analyzes your EGD file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The EGD Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our EGD converter.
