A .EG file is a proprietary Image It Backup Disk Image primarily developed by WASAY Software Technology Inc. It is used to store compressed, block-level copies of hard drives and partitions, often utilized by PC manufacturers (OEMs) to distribute factory-reset recovery images. Historically, these files were natively generated and restored using the legacy Image It software suite.
Users typically encounter .EG files on old backup drives and face immediate challenges trying to access the trapped data. The format has severe disadvantages: it is completely proprietary, lacks public documentation, and is entirely unsupported by modern operating systems like Windows 11 or macOS. You cannot natively mount an .EG file as a virtual drive, and standard extraction tools like 7-Zip will fail to parse its closed-source compression and custom partition mapping.
When dealing with a .EG archive, the most practical conversion targets are standard disk images like ISO or IMG. These universal formats can be easily mounted by any operating system. Alternatively, extracting the internal contents into standard ZIP or TAR archives allows for direct file access, though boot records and file permissions will be lost.
Because the .EG format relies on an undocumented wrapper, standard online converters consistently fail to process it. Often, only the original Image It software running in a legacy environment can reliably reconstruct the data.
