About EFP files

The .EFP file extension is a source of confusion because it serves three distinct, incompatible purposes.

  1. Silkroad Online Effect File (57%): Most commonly, this is a proprietary game asset used by Silkroad Online. These files contain data for particle systems and visual effects (identified by the JMXVEFF header). They are binary encoded and strictly locked to the game engine, making them impossible to open with standard image viewers like Photoshop.
  2. CCH ProSystem fx Tax File: A significant minority of users encounter .EFP files as encrypted tax form packages created by Wolters Kluwer CCH ProSystem fx. These are critical financial documents often utilizing a CAP wrapper. The main drawback here is proprietary lock-in: without an active, expensive software license, your tax data is inaccessible.
  3. Microsoft Exchange Form: An older format used for Exchange Forms Designer templates.
