The .DW2 file is a proprietary 2D computer-aided design (CAD) format. It stores vector geometry, layers, blocks, and engineering annotations. The vast majority of .DW2 files belong to DesignCAD, a 2D drafting software developed by IMSI Design. Occasionally, the extension appears as a legacy 2D drawing exported from older versions of Pro/ENGINEER (now PTC Creo).
Sharing a .DW2 file presents major workflow bottlenecks. It is a strictly proprietary format. Native web browsers cannot render CAD vector graphics, and standard desktop image viewers will simply show an error. To view or edit the file natively, users are forced to buy a commercial license for specific CAD software. If you send a .DW2 file to a manufacturer or colleague who uses AutoCAD or SolidWorks, they will likely be unable to open it without purchasing third-party import filters.
To fix this compatibility problem, you should convert the file. The best target formats are DXF (Drawing Exchange Format) or DWG for editing in other CAD environments. Note that converting complex proprietary CAD files can result in broken layer structures, lost line weights, or missing custom fonts. If the recipient only needs to view or print the drawing, convert it to a PDF document.
