About DVR files

A .dvr file is a proprietary video recording created by standalone Digital Video Recorder (CCTV) systems, including those manufactured by WAPA, TVT Digital, Grain Media, and 247Security. Unlike standard video files, these recordings are often raw data streams dumped directly to a hard drive without standard file headers, making them unplayable in common media players like Windows Media Player or QuickTime.

Users typically encounter these files when extracting footage for evidence (e.g., for police or insurance claims) and find they cannot be opened. Because manufacturers use unique encryption or proprietary wrappers to ensure data integrity, .dvr files often fail even in versatile players like VLC. To view, edit, or share this footage, it must be converted into a standard format. For general viewing and web sharing, convert to MP4 (H.264). For archival or forensic purposes where quality preservation is critical, convert to AVI or MOV.

The DVR Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our DVR converter.
