About DV files
.DV files are standard definition video files created by early digital camcorders using the DV format (such as MiniDV or DVCAM). These files contain raw, lightly compressed video data captured directly from magnetic tape. You can open them using desktop software like VLC media player or edit them in professional software like Adobe Premiere Pro.
The main disadvantage of the .DV format is its massive file size and outdated architecture. Because DV uses inefficient intraframe compression, it consumes roughly 13 GB of storage for a single hour of 480i standard-definition video. Furthermore, .DV files are completely unsupported by modern web browsers, smartphones, and smart TVs. They rely on interlaced video, which causes ugly horizontal "combing" artifacts when played on modern progressive computer monitors.
To make these videos usable today, you must convert them. For web playback and sharing on mobile devices, convert to MP4 using the H.264 codec. For long-term archiving with minimal quality loss, convert to MKV. For professional video editing, convert to MOV or Apple ProRes. Drag and drop your file to analyze and convert it - free, online, and without installing software.
Note: A small percentage of .DV files are actually save files used by video games like the Gothic series, Deltarune, or Dungeon Village. These are simple binary or text data files, completely unrelated to video formats.

The DV Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our DV converter.
