About DT5 files

A .dt5 file is primarily a legacy genealogy database created by Brother's Keeper (specifically version 5.x). These files serve as the backbone for storing family tree structures, including names, dates, relationships, and multimedia references. A secondary, less common use is as a session data file for TestOut (LabSim), storing progress for IT certification exams.

The Problem: Proprietary Lock-In

The main challenge with .dt5 files is that they are proprietary binary databases. You cannot open them in standard tools like Microsoft Excel, Notepad, or Google Sheets. Furthermore, for Brother's Keeper files, a single .dt5 file is often just one segment of a multi-file relational database (usually paired with .IX5 index files). Without the accompanying index files or the original software engine, the data is effectively scrambled and unreadable.

The Solution: Exporting for Compatibility

For Genealogy: The only reliable way to convert this data is to use Brother's Keeper 5 (or upgrade to version 6/7 which imports it). Once opened, you should immediately export the family tree to a GEDCOM (GED) file. GEDCOM is the universal standard accepted by Ancestry.com and MyHeritage.
For Archiving: If you need a visual record, use the software's 'Report' feature to print charts to PDF.
For TestOut: These files are generally strictly for internal use by the TestOut platform and typically cannot be converted for external use.
