About DT5 files

The .DT5 file extension is primarily used for two completely distinct, closed data structures: a Genealogy Database file for Brother's Keeper and a Session Data file for TestOut Pro IT certification training.

Both formats have severe interoperability disadvantages. Brother's Keeper uses .DT5 to store complex family tree connections, text notes, and event dates. However, it is an aging, highly proprietary format that modern web browsers and contemporary genealogy platforms like Ancestry or Family Tree Maker cannot read. TestOut session files are similarly restrictive. They store local, offline simulation states and student progress, completely locking the data behind proprietary encoding to prevent cheating or manual editing.

Users typically want to convert genealogy .DT5 files to GED (GEDCOM), the universal standard for sharing family history, to migrate away from old software. TestOut users often seek to extract their progress data into standard CSV or PDF formats for personal record-keeping.

Because these are closed, proprietary databases, standard online converters fail to process them. Third-party tools simply lack the internal decryption keys or the schema logic to parse the relationships. Often, only the original software can properly open or export the data. Despite this, you can drag and drop your .DT5 file into convert.guru to see what it is and convert it if supported. Our analyzer will inspect the file's internal hex data, extract readable text, and if a supported embedded format is detected, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your DT5 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted VSF, MYO and CMG files.

The DT5 Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our DT5 converter.
