About DT1 files
A .DT1 file typically represents either a Digital Terrain Elevation Data (DTED) Level 1 file or a Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) data file. The DTED format is an elevation model standard originally developed by the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency for military applications, providing basic 3D terrain matrices. The GPR variation is a proprietary format generated by equipment from Geophysical Survey Systems, Inc. to capture subsurface radar scans. Both formats present significant challenges: they are highly specialized, often massive in size, and impossible to open natively in standard operating systems or web browsers. Without expensive or niche software like ArcGIS or QGIS for DTED, or RADAN for GPR data, these files are effectively locked. Users typically need to convert .DT1 files to more accessible formats like .GeoTIFF or CSV for terrain rendering, or standard raster formats for radar visualizations. Because these are complex, closed, and often proprietary binary formats, standard online converters fail to process them. They require the original software to correctly interpret the spatial mathematics and grid coordinates.
Convert.Guru analyzes your DT1 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted DT3, DT, TIN, LDK, LRF and DT2 files.
FAQ
If you want to convert DT1 file to SHP, KML, KMZ, GPX, GEOJSON, TOPOJSON, TIF, TIFF, ECW, SID, IMG or DEM, you can use QGIS or similar software from the "Geospatial and Geophysical Data" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert LAZ, KMZ, DTM, CSV, DEM, PRJ, LAS, GPX, DSM, SHP, DBF or KML files to DT1, try QGIS or another comparable tool in the "Geospatial and Geophysical Data" category.
The DT1 Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our DT1 converter.
