A .dotm file is a Microsoft Word Macro-Enabled Template, introduced with Office 2007 to replace the older binary DOT format. It serves two distinct functions: storing document formatting styles (layouts, fonts, margins) and hosting Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) macros for automation. While powerful for corporate workflows, this duality is a main issue.
First, the presence of VBA macros triggers aggressive security warnings in modern operating systems and email clients; many users cannot open these files without navigating complex "Enable Content" trust dialogs or group policy blocks. Second, the default behavior of a .dotm file is counter-intuitive for editing: double-clicking it spawns a new, unnamed DOCX or DOCM document rather than opening the template itself. This makes quick edits difficult. Furthermore, proprietary VBA scripts rarely function correctly in non-Microsoft alternatives like Google Docs or LibreOffice, rendering the automation useless outside the Microsoft Office ecosystem.
For secure distribution, we recommend converting .dotm to standard DOCX (if the template functionality isn't needed) or DOTX (to keep the template behavior but remove the security risk of macros).
