About DJV files
The .DJV file (DjVu) is a compressed document image format originally developed by AT&T. It is primarily used to store high-resolution scanned documents, digital books, and magazines. The format uses advanced layer separation, splitting the page into background texture and foreground text, which allows it to achieve file sizes significantly smaller than standard image formats. Despite its excellent compression, the .DJV format is now largely obsolete and highly impractical for modern workflows. Native operating systems, default document viewers, and web browsers do not support .DJV files. Users are forced to download and install outdated, third-party software like DjVuLibre or WinDjView just to read a single document. This creates major friction when sharing files with clients, students, or colleagues. To solve this compatibility problem, you need to convert your .DJV files to modern, universally accepted formats. For sharing, printing, and general reading, convert your file to .PDF. For long-term archiving, convert to .PDF/A. If you want to extract individual pages as pictures, convert to .JPG or .WEBP. Note that converting a highly compressed .DJV to .PDF will usually result in a larger file size, as standard PDF lacks the specific layer-separation algorithms of DjVu. The DJV Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our DJV converter.
