About DI files

The .di extension represents a "split personality" file type, creating confusion for users. In modern software development (approx. 29% of cases), it is a Papyrus Diagram Interchange file used by Eclipse Papyrus to store the visual layout of UML models. These are XML-based text files that contain coordinate data but not the actual model logic (which lives in a linked UML file). Opening them in a text editor just reveals raw XML code.

Alternatively, in legal and archiving contexts (approx. 7%), a .di file is a legacy Wang Annotation file. Popularized by "Imaging for Windows" in the 1990s, these files store sticky notes, highlights, and redactions overlaid on TIFF images. The critical problem: Modern image viewers often display the base image but ignore the .di sidecar file, meaning you might miss critical annotations or redacted info. Finally, in structural engineering, it may be a DICAD reinforcement drawing.

The DI Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our DI converter.
