About DFW files
The .DFW file extension serves multiple completely different software applications. Nearly half of all .DFW files are Derive for Windows mathematical worksheets originally developed by Texas Instruments. Other common uses include tournament database files for Darts for Windows, fillable templates by docu-form GmbH, and firmware descriptors for Datalogic or Qualcomm devices. The main disadvantage of the .DFW format is extreme fragmentation. A .DFW file from a math class is useless in darts tournament software. Furthermore, Derive is obsolete, meaning users cannot open old homework or research without a legacy Windows environment. Darts for Windows files are proprietary JetDB databases, making the data inaccessible on mobile phones or modern web browsers. For Derive worksheets, the best conversion target is PDF to preserve mathematical notation for printing. For Darts databases, users typically want to export the tournament brackets to CSV or XLSX to manipulate the data in Excel. Because .DFW files can be binary worksheets, JetDB databases, or even compressed ZIP files, standard online converters usually fail because they guess the wrong format.
