About OGW files
An .OGW file is a strictly proprietary workbook format generated by OriginLab Origin, a premier software suite for scientific data analysis and graphing. These files serve as containers for worksheets, columns of raw data, and analysis results, acting essentially as a high-powered, scientific equivalent to an Excel file.
The main limitation for users is the "walled garden" nature of the format. Unlike CSV or XLSX, an .OGW file is binary and cannot be opened by standard office suites like Microsoft Excel or text editors. This creates a significant bottleneck when sharing research data with colleagues who lack an expensive Origin license or are working on macOS/Linux where native support is non-existent.
For raw data accessibility and collaboration, the best route is converting to XLSX (Excel) or CSV. If the workbook serves as a layout for visual summaries or embedded graphs intended for publication, converting to PDF or high-resolution raster formats like PNG is recommended to preserve the visual state without requiring the original software.
Convert.Guru analyzes your OGW file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert OGW file to XLS, XLSX, XLSM, XLSB, ODS, CSV, TSV, TAB, DIF, SLK, WK1 or WK3, you can use Origin or similar software from the "Scientific Data Workbook" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert WQ1, XLSM, NOTES, QPW, WK3, WB2, WKS, XLSB, 123, XLS, WB1 or XLSX files to OGW, try Origin or another comparable tool in the "Scientific Data Workbook" category.
The OGW Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our OGW converter.
