About DFONT files
The .dfont extension identifies a Datafork TrueType Font, a specific wrapper format developed by Apple for macOS. It was engineered to solve a legacy file system issue: classic Mac fonts stored critical data in a "resource fork," which would often be stripped or corrupted when files were moved to Windows servers, Linux environments, or sent via email. The .dfont format moved this structure into the data fork, making the file safer to transfer but effectively locking the content into the Apple ecosystem.
This proprietary structure can be a hassle for cross-platform workflows. Windows cannot natively open or install .dfont files, and they are largely unrecognized by standard CSS in web development. Designers often encounter these files when retrieving archived brand assets or receiving packaged InDesign folders from Mac-exclusive teams. To make these fonts usable in standard software like Adobe Photoshop, Microsoft Word, or for web hosting, they must be converted. The industry standard is to convert .dfont to TTF (TrueType) or OTF (OpenType) for broad desktop compatibility, or WOFF2 for optimized web performance.
Convert.Guru analyzes your DFONT file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert DFONT file to TTF, OTF, WOFF, WOFF2, EOT, SVG, BDF, PCF, FNT, FON, PFM or AFM, you can use Apple_Font_Book or similar software from the "Mac OS X Font Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert UFO, WOFF, PFB, GXF, AFM, F3F, SFD, WOFF2, PSF, TTF, TXF or OTF files to DFONT, try Apple_Font_Book or another comparable tool in the "Mac OS X Font Storage" category.
The DFONT Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our DFONT converter.
