About DED files

.DED files are proprietary vector-based engraving design documents created by Dr. Engrave, a specialized software package developed by Roland DG Corporation. These files contain 2D vector shapes, text, layout data, and specific toolpath instructions required to operate Roland's CNC routing and engraving machines.

Users frequently need to convert .DED files because the format suffers from strict vendor lock-in. It is entirely proprietary. You cannot open a .DED file natively in industry-standard vector graphics software like Adobe Illustrator or Inkscape. If you do not have a $50/month subscription or an active software license tied to Roland hardware, the files are effectively locked. You cannot view them in web browsers or share them easily with clients for approval.

The best conversion targets for .DED files are standard vector formats like SVG, EPS, or DXF. Converting to these formats preserves the 2D geometric paths and text outlines. However, any machine-specific data, such as cutter depth, feed rate, or toolpath instructions, will be permanently lost during conversion.

Because .DED is a closed, proprietary format, it is extremely difficult to open or convert outside of its native ecosystem. Standard online converters fail to process it because the internal binary structure is undocumented by Roland. Often, only the original Dr. Engrave software can properly read or export the vector data. However, just drag and drop your file into convert.guru to see what it is and convert it if supported. Our system can inspect the file, display internal text or metadata, and if our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded vector format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

*(Note: A tiny fraction of files with the .ded extension are actually victims of the DED Cryptor Ransomware. These are encrypted system files, not design documents, and cannot be converted without a decryption key).*.

Convert.Guru analyzes your DED file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted JPG and PNG files.

The DED Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our DED converter.
