About DBQ files

A .dbq file is primarily a Database Query definition used by enterprise software like IBM Db2 QMF (Query Management Facility) and AutoCAD. Unlike a standard database file (e.g., MDB or ACCDB) that holds actual records, a .dbq file typically contains the instructions (SQL code or XML parameters) required to fetch data from a server. This distinction is the most common limitation for users: they expect to see a spreadsheet of results, but the file only contains the "question" sent to the database.

Because these files are often plain text or XML-based, you usually do not need a converter to view the logic. Changing the extension to TXT or XML often allows you to view the underlying SQL queries in a text editor. However, if you need to convert the results of the query into a usable format like CSV, XLSX, or PDF, you must open the file in its original environment (e.g., IBM Cognos or AutoCAD dbConnect) and run the export function from there. Legacy versions from Corel Paradox or SmartWare may be binary and strictly require the original software.

Convert.Guru analyzes your DBQ file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted IMR, QRY and QUERY files.

The DBQ Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our DBQ converter.
