Convert a file to CXR
To convert other file formats to the "High Dynamic Range Image" file type, you need software like Chaos Corona or a similar tool.
About CXR files
The .CXR file primarily functions as a Corona EXR Image created by Chaos Corona, a specialized rendering engine used within 3D host applications like Autodesk 3ds Max and Cinema 4D. It stores high-dynamic-range (HDR) image data, multi-channel render elements, and LightMix configurations. In rare scientific contexts, the .CXR extension is also used as an FMAT Plate Results File by Applied Biosystems.
A major disadvantage of the .CXR format is its extreme file size. Files frequently exceed several gigabytes because they contain uncompressed 32-bit float data across dozens of layers. It is a proprietary format that requires the standalone Corona Image Editor or a paid 3D software subscription to open. You cannot view these files natively in web browsers, default operating system tools, or basic image viewers.
To share 3D renders with clients or use them on the web, you must convert .CXR files to standard image formats. The best conversion targets are EXR for professional compositing in software like Nuke without losing dynamic range, or PNG and JPG for standard web distribution. Converting to an 8-bit format like JPG will permanently strip away the HDR data and LightMix editability.
This file format is difficult to open or convert because it acts as a proprietary wrapper around the OpenEXR standard, injected with custom multi-channel metadata. Standard online converters fail because they lack the specific decoding algorithms for Corona's custom channels. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your CXR file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The CXR Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our CXR converter.
