About CVC files

A .CVC file is a proprietary video container originally developed for cVideo closed-circuit television (CCTV) surveillance systems. These files store video, audio, and timestamp metadata recorded by security cameras. Historically, opening these files required the proprietary media player bundled with the original DVR or cVideo Management Software. Because it is a closed, proprietary format from a discontinued system (acquired by SYS Technologies in 2005), .CVC files are notoriously difficult to work with. They are not natively supported by standard media players like VLC or Windows Media Player, nor can they be played directly in web browsers. If you need to share security footage with law enforcement, lawyers, or insurance agents, handing them a raw .CVC file is often a dead end. Converting .CVC to universally supported formats like MP4, AVI, or MKV is highly recommended to ensure seamless playback across all devices. However, be aware that proprietary metadata - such as encrypted timestamps or camera overlays - may be lost during the conversion process unless it is hardcoded into the video frames. Standard online converters usually fail to process .CVC files because surveillance formats are intentionally obscure and lack support in open-source libraries. Just drag and drop your file into convert.guru to identify the format, view its internal structure, and convert it when possible. If our analysis detects a supported underlying video stream (like standard H.264) wrapped inside the proprietary container, viewing or extracting the video may still be possible.

The CVC Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our CVC converter.
