About CUT files

The .cut file extension represents a complex landscape of file formats, most prominently serving as a Cutter Control File for Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines, vinyl cutters, and plotters. These files contain vector path data and machine-specific coordinates used by industry-leading hardware from companies like Gerber Technology and Esko to automate the physical cutting of fabrics, vinyl, and metals. A secondary, yet historically significant use, is the Dr. Halo raster image format, a legacy graphics standard from the DOS era.

The primary challenge users face with .cut files is proprietary fragmentation. A file generated for a Gerber cutter often utilizes a specific binary or ASCII structure that is incompatible with standard design software like Adobe Illustrator or AutoCAD. This "hardware lock-in" makes it difficult to view the cutting path without expensive, niche production software. Similarly, legacy Dr. Halo images are virtually unopenable on modern operating systems without specialized emulation or conversion.

To overcome these hurdles, conversion is the standard workflow. For industrial and design purposes, converting cutter files to DXF (Drawing Exchange Format) or SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) allows for editing in standard CAD and vector tools. For viewing and archiving cutting plans without specialized software, PDF is the ideal target. If you are dealing with legacy Dr. Halo graphics, converting to PNG or JPG ensures the image is preserved and accessible on modern devices.
