About CUT files

The .CUT file extension is most commonly used for automated cutting plotter data files. These files store vector coordinates and instructions that tell digital cutting machines - such as those from Gerber Technology, Esko, and Cricut - exactly where to cut, fold, or score materials like vinyl, fabric, or cardboard. Another historically notable use is the Dr. Halo raster image format, an early DOS-based bitmap image. Additionally, some video games use the .CUT extension to store proprietary cutscene media or sequence data. The main disadvantage of .CUT plotter files is their proprietary, hardware-locked nature. You usually cannot open them in standard vector editing tools like Adobe Illustrator or Inkscape without specific plugins. Similarly, legacy Dr. Halo images are completely unsupported by modern web browsers and standard image viewers. Because of these severe compatibility limits, sharing or editing a .CUT file without the original hardware software is extremely difficult. To solve this, converting your .CUT file is the most pragmatic workaround. For vector cutting data, convert to SVG (for general web and vector editing) or DXF (for CAD and universal plotter support). If you need to share a preview, convert to PDF. For legacy Dr. Halo bitmaps, convert to PNG or WebP for immediate viewing on modern devices. Drag and drop your file to analyze and convert it - free, online, and without installing software.
