About CRYPTRA files

The .CRYPTRA file is an encrypted container format developed by BMB Software. Users typically generate these files to secure sensitive personal data, financial records, or private images from unauthorized access. Files are managed using the original Cryptra utility. This format presents significant operational challenges. It is proprietary and entirely dependent on specific software. Users often face major roadblocks when they migrate to a new device or no longer have the Cryptra application installed, rendering the files essentially dead weight. The main disadvantage is the encryption itself; the data is locked into scrambled ciphertext, meaning standard web browsers, media players, or document viewers cannot read it. Standard online converters fail completely because they expect a predictable file structure, not randomized binary data. Users generally need to extract the contents back to their original state, targeting standard formats like PDF, DOCX, or JPG. However, this extraction inevitably requires the correct decryption password. This file format is exceptionally difficult to open or convert because its core design is to prevent external access. Often, only the original Cryptra software can properly read or export the data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format that bypassed encryption, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your CRYPTRA file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted AES, SDD and ETZ files.

The CRYPTRA Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our CRYPTRA converter.
